Living Rooms

Most consumers are quick to upgrade to the latest computers, cell phones and music players as technology gets more sophisticated-but when it comes to televisions and DVD players, many viewers are still stuck in the last century.

"The analog TV system we have in the U. S. is more than 50 years old," explains Andy Parsons, spokesman for the Blu-ray Disc Association, which is working to bring high-definition home entertainment into the mainstream. "In the next year or two, people are going to see some exciting products that will make living rooms feel like movie theaters. "

What's driving this change? In a word, content. TV broadcasters are offering more high-definition programming via satellite and cable. And, movie studios are preparing to release their movies on high-capacity discs, such as Blu-ray discs, making it possible to buy, rent and view Hollywood favorites in high-definition. People who get to see a true HDTV setup showing the latest Hollywood blockbuster at their local electronics stores can see the difference in quality immediately.

"HDTV will catch on when people see that they can buy movies and games in the new format," says Parsons. Movie discs using the Blu-ray format are expected to appear in stores beginning in June. Shoppers can expect to find favorite titles such as "Crash" and the "Terminator" series available, with more and more high-definition discs coming to stores throughout the summer.

The improvement in quality, Parsons says, is comparable to what viewers noticed when they switched from VHS tapes to DVDs. "When you watch a video tape today, you really notice how poor the picture is compared to your DVDs-and you don't have the menus and all of the added features that you do with DVDs," he explains. "The shift to HDTV and high-definition discs will be just as dramatic. "

Shoppers can expect to see discs and players with competing formats, Parsons says, and they'll need to consider what they are getting for their money. For instance, he explains, they should ask questions about the breadth of games, movies and other products available, so they don't get stuck with a format with no future. Blu-ray Disc, for example, is partnering with major movie studios, music publishers and game developers, and plans to deliver the industry's broadest range of home entertainment content. In addition, the players will play all of your existing standard-definition DVDs.

Today, it might be hard to imagine what impact the new high-definition discs and TVs will have on our home entertainment viewing. However, Parsons says, "In a few years it will be hard to remember that we once thought DVDs were the coolest movie format around. "

PDCA Expo 2016

PDCA Home

Chris Shank PDCA Picture“The 2016 Expo is going to be more targeted than ever before on what painting contractors are asking for: course topics specific to industry segment (residential/commercial) and stage of business growth, and hands-on training.

The question we asked ourselves in planning this event is:

‘what kind of education gives contractors the tools they need to take back with them to apply to the challenges they face?’

Every class block offers something for everyone in all segments and stages of business growth…no one left behind! This year we are also featuring a half-day, hands-on Master’s Class from Prep-To-Finish; a fun Throw-Down debate on the topic of generalization versus specialization in the painting industry, and residential/ commercial/ craftsmanship tours around the city designed to deliver relevant industry information.

The days will be packed with peer-to-peer networking, panel discussions with the experts, cutting edge business strategies to keep your business strong, and just good fun unwinding with fellow entrepreneurs and business owners. It’s the can’t miss event of the year for painting contractors.”

BRUSHAPER OFFERS NEW WAY TO STORE AND DRY PAINT BRUSHES

A paint brush cover made for painters by painters

Traverse City, MI, February 27, 2016 – Painting contractors and do-it-yourselfers know all too well the frustrations of starting a project, not having time to finish, and ruining expensive paint brushes. A Northern Michigan company has developed the go-to product sure to make every painting project that much easier. Whether a professional or a do-it-yourself painter, proper paint brush care is key to a job well done, and Brushaper offers a quick and easy way to store and dry brushes.

brush cover“Brush care is important. Without proper storage, paint brushes get ruined quickly with frayed bristles and worn edges,”said Andy Oliver, founder and owner of Brushaper. “Brushaper was developed to give painters exactly what they need…a paint brush cover that protects, dries, and shapes the brush between uses. Using Brushaper will extend the life of your brush, saving time, money and frustration.”

The result of several prototypes, Brushaper is the end product of many years of testing and improved designs ultimately resulting in a high-quality, durable product. Unlike the cardboard covers that come with most paint brushes, Brushaper won’t fall apart or get soggy. Made of a stretchable, moisture-wicking material, Brushaper allows the brush to breathe and not trap harmful moisture like the plastic brush covers. Brushaper fits tight to help protect, shape and dry the paint brush. It can even be run through the washing machine.

Brushaper was designed for professional painters and the weekend warrior alike. It is a paint brush cover made for painters by painters. Affordable and easy to use, it maintains the shape of every paint brush. In addition, Brushaper is a patented paint brush cover that is 100 percent made in the USA.

Brushaper is available in three sizes – 2” Angled, 2.5” Angled, and 3” Angled – to properly fit and protect the bristles of every brush. For additional information or to order online, go to www.brushaper.com or contact us at info@brushaper.com.

About Brushaper Founder Andy Oliver:

Andy Oliver grew up in the painting and contracting business working summers with his father, a Detroit-area painting contractor of nearly 30 years. After graduating from Michigan Tech, he started a career as an engineer but decided to put that career on hold for a bit while he started his own successful painting contractor business in Traverse City. After 10 years in the contractor business, Andy has returned to engineering, and has found a way to combine both painting and engineering with the development of Brushaper.

Modern Interior Design

So, are you thinking of a career in Interior Design? So, are you interested in physical spaces, and do you frequently recognize your surroundings. Do you think to yourself about how you could make the space look better? Alternatively, do you even make suggestions to people on how they could spruce up their living spaces (without offending them of course!) If so, then why not do some research on career info for the interior design profession?

So, are you a creative or artistic person? Do you imagine that you could re-design a favorite restaurant? Interior Designers must be able to work well in a team to solve problems and challenges that often come up. Careers in Interior Design directly affect the health, safety and overall well being of the people that work and live in the spaces that Interior Designers design.

If you are looking for career info for interior design then you can search out many resources. For instance, the world-wide-web has a wealth of interior design info regarding the many schools that offer interior design programs, whether online or in a studio and classroom. Check you local yellow pages for Interior Design firms, give them a call, and ask a professional how you can get a start in the exciting world of interior design.

Interior Designers are not only creative and artistic but they need to be organized and well disciplined. People skills are extremely important, as you will be working with the public quite often.

Many people when searching for career info on interior design are very interested in the rewards of an interior designer, specifically, how much money could they make in this profession. As with any other profession, experience can dictate how much you make. First yr interior designers can expect to make in the range of thirty-five to forty thousand. Designers with years of experience can make upwards of a hundred thousand dollars a year.

Obviously, hard work and dedication in the field of interior design may be very rewarding and fulfilling. Interior Designers require a lot of energy and creativity to excel at their profession.

When doing your research on career info about interior design, keep in mind that the demand for interior design services tends to follow the overall economy. Hence, in a strong economy the demand is higher. In a weaker economy, the demand is lower with fewer people spending the money on design services.

As an Interior Designer, you must be comfortable with meeting with the public and dealing with difficult people. You must be a clear communicator and be able to have your ideas across effectively.

Ask yourself whether you are the right kind of person for this demanding and often very stressful career. When researching career info as an Interior Design student it is important to consider this important fact about yourself before committing to a Design school.

Interior Decor

Since there has been a trend in recent years towards more earthy color tones for interior decorating, Native American Indian art can fit in nicely as part of home decor. Most subjects used in Native American Indian art tend to be focused on nature whether the pieces are prints, carvings or pottery. Colors tend to be earthy shades of browns, reds, blacks and yellows since the main raw materials are wood as in carvings from the Pacific Northwest region and clay from the Southwest. Even painted wood carvings or pottery tend to have natural colors often found in nature such as greens and blues. All of these colors work well with the more natural styles of interior decorating today.

The Pacific Northwest region which covers the states of Oregon, Washington, British Columbia (Canada) and the southern part of Alaska, produces some excellent Native American Indian art in the form of wood carvings. This is not surprising since the Pacific Northwest is abundant with forests which have provided the wood as raw material for the region's Native American Indian art. The wood is sometimes painted in striking colors or just stained with natural looking browns. Either way, such pieces fit in perfectly in rooms with earthy color tones. I have seen walls of living rooms, bedrooms, office den rooms, hallways and even bathrooms enhanced with Pacific Northwest Indian art in the form of both prints and wood plaque carvings. The Pacific Northwest Native American artists also make some of the most striking aboriginal masks in the world which are also suitable for hanging on walls.

Native American Indian art as home decor helps bring in an atmosphere of nature in the overall interior decorating of a room. This is because of their natural colors and also their subject matters which tend to be animals such as eagles, bears, thunderbirds, killer whales and salmons. Pacific Northwest Native art in particular gives homes in that region a local flavor. Many homes in this part of North America have this type of artwork as part of interior decorating. This style of Native American Indian art is still relatively unknown to many parts of North America and the rest of the world so for homes outside of the Pacific Northwest region, a nice wood carving can be seen as exotic treasure brought back from a homeowner's travels. Check out some examples of Pacific Northwest Indian art either in a gallery or online and imagine how a piece or two can be part of your home's interior decorating.

2016 Trends in the Interior Painting Business

Your Local Residential Painting Company Looks at Forecasts for the Coming Year

The interior painting business is one that marks time through the shifts in industry trends. Different colours, patterns, and overall aesthetics come into fashion at different times, and when you’ve seen enough of these shifts, you begin to be able to forecast where future trends might go—which the world’s biggest manufacturers of house paints have already done for 2016, and the results are looking good! For a residential painting company, it’s important to keep on top of these forecasts, so without further ado, here is what you can look forward to in 2016:

A New Kind of Bold

Last year’s palettes were often described with a single word: bold. In 2015, bold palettes were those that had bright, vibrant colours mixing together to create a powerful effect—lots of strong violets, reds, yellows, blues, and more. But in 2016, we’ll see a lot of residential painting companies redefining what it means for a home to have a bold colour scheme. Cool colours (not James Dean cool, but temperature cool—though they could be both!) like blue and purple, as well as red, grey, and brown, are seeing a surge in deep, muted, dark tones that create a distinctively rich sensation. From plum and navy to crimson, charcoal, and inky black, these colours suggest hidden depths waiting to be explored—if you’re bold enough to employ them in your living spaces.

The Art of Subtlety

The interior painting business has never been a one-trick pony. For all the aforementioned hues and shades redefining what it means to be bold, they have been matched by equally beautiful colours that are soft, subtle, and calming. From blues that evoke the morning sky and yellows that speak of lemonade and banana popsicles on a warm spring day, to gentle, silky lilac and creamy pink, these subtle tones are great on their own or as the counterbalance to a deeper, more daring shade.

Fifty Shades of White

Leaving your walls looking like plain white primer might be a big no-no, but there is so much more to explore when it comes to white tones. In rooms that heavily feature beautiful furnishings, artwork, or architectural elements, a white wall is perfect for not overwhelming the space. But a white or soft grey that evokes soft paper, cream, fresh snow, or other subtle characteristics will make sure it’s far from boring! These are also perfect for blending with subtle tones to create a soft and relaxing space, since a plain white might still create unwanted contrast, and even blend well with rich, dark colours.

Will these colours and shades dominate the interior painting business in 2016? The experts seem convinced—and if you want to take advantage of these exciting new trends in the coming year, your local residential painting company will be happy to help!

Home Design

Feng Shui design helps you to take beneficial and effective actions in your home or living space so that your house can have an optimal flow of Chi.

The Feng Shui design ideas discussed in this article can help Feng Shui beginners to understand some of the fundamental principles of Feng Shui as well as how they can apply for the principles and enhancing their homes and lives.

Like the positive and negative energies (yin and yang) existing in nature, every room and every home has both positive and negative areas. There are strengths that already exist, just as there are weaknesses. The Feng Shui design changes that are carried out in a house are always meant to help enhance the weak areas and decrease Chi that is too strong, ultimately yielding a balanced, harmonious feeling that is the cornerstone of a contented and successful life

Feng Shui Design And Power Areas

A concept typically used in a Feng Shui design is the idea of 'power' areas. Feng Shui recognizes nine power areas inside buildings–some have great supportive energy, some are much less favorable.

A power place is an area of the home which can be as big as a room or as small as a tiny little nook, but this particular area has strong associations with your life (or parts of your life) that mean a good deal to you at a particular point in a given time frame. Feng Shui power spots are unique to each person, family and home. They are determined not only by the things that are going on in a person's life presently but also by the design and architecture of their particular living space.

According to Feng Shui, power spots are unique to each person, family and home and some of these are determined not only by the things that are going on in your life right now but also by the design and architecture of your particular living space.

Home Accessories

Finding accessories for your new house is something very exciting and unique. This would give you a pleasant and wonderful experience. As there are various accessories made available everywhere it is possible to get much from the market these days. Many do not have the real budget to spend on buying accessories so it is normal to say to cut down on the cost of something which is considered to be of less importance. It is always the best to choose those which are known to be the necessity rather than pondering on all other products.

The first thing to follow while shopping for home accessories for remodeling is to look out for second hand products which are well polished and good looking so that it looks new to all and no one finds it to be of second hand. During times when shopping for second hands goods always make it a point to look out at the garage sales and various websites for online shopping. This would easily yield you a good sum and also help you in saving a lot of money over quality products. Bargains could enable you in making few amounts that would help in serving the best of all.

You can easily clean and polish the second hand goods and this is the most important way to save money by discarding the aspect of owning brand new furnishings. In the same way, shopping the sales would let you save a lot of money over home accessories as this would help you get it at the right price. You get to buy them at right prices and also at cheaper rates by making them available at discount prices. This proves to be a brilliant idea for all those who need these to be done as soon as possible. Others could easily wait for any sale to be put up and can get them soon.

Through sales it is possible for you to buy many varieties of pieces at lower prices and mostly you can easily get it at the end of summer sales and in other festive occasions. Many of the furniture stores also keep sale of goods and you can get the floor models or scratch and dent pieces which could add to your home accessories. These are put on sale just because of small defects or blemishes which are present in these accessories. But if you're looking out for personal use and not for presenting them, it might a great saving for you.

Home accessories are considered to be very necessary for every house and without these your house looks gorgeous odd. These are most importantly needed for all those who are remodeling their house as this could add magic to your house. It is made quite possible for you to get the things done in an easy while opting for sales, discounts and even by preferring over second hand sales. Therefore, before remodeling the house it is very important to think over differing factors and take the right decision.

Negotiating With General Contractors

Introduction

When bidding to and working with general contractors, there are a number of things that are critical for your path to success. These include Marketing, The Bidding Process and Contract Negotiation.

Marketing

marketingYour success starts with smart marketing. I would encourage anyone to evaluate the General Contractors within their target market area. You can even grade them as an “A”, “B”, “C” etc. contractor, based on certain criteria. The key item to consider is their reputation with other subcontractors, or if you have worked with them before, your own experience. Ask if they are fair and honest, do they pay on time, stay on schedule, do they communicate well and do they keep their commitments? By making these assessments you can build a list of preferred customers to bid to. Building relationships with this target market will also increase your odds of success if their projects tend to be more of the “negotiated” type rather than being open to all comers. This increases your chances substantially.

The Bidding Process

One of the goals of building such quality relationships is to be included on the customers “preferred vendor list”. By maintaining contacts with the estimators and project managers, you can keep in the loop with their available bids. This provides a huge advantage over your competition that is chasing bids through the Plan Centers that provide less selective opportunities.

When you do receive an invitation to bid, or a RFP (Request for Proposal), the email will typically include a link to their FTP site where you can download the bid documents. You can then print the Plans or import them into your takeoff software program.

blueprintOnce you have your bid put together, I would suggest sending a preliminary “Scope Letter” to the General(s) to allow them to preview what you intend to include in your bid. Within your scope letter be clear and keep it concise. List your “Inclusions”, “Exclusions” and “Clarifications”. One thing to note; Most Generals don’t like to see the word “Exclusions”, as it causes concern that they may not have the painting scope completely covered. It is better to say that you assume a particular area of work to be “by others” (Transparent finishes, traffic markings or any task you normally don’t perform), and offer an alternate added pricing to cover it, even if you need to get a sub bid from someone else for it.

The scope letter is an excellent communication tool, and most Generals appreciate it. This can also help to set you apart from your competition who may not include this professional courtesy. One other item that is appreciated is if you point out any omissions or errors in the plans or specifications. If the Generals can rely on you to be their expert, this will help strengthen your relationship and further set you apart from your competitors.

Contract Negotiations

After your bid is submitted and evaluated by the customer, and you are the “apparent low bidder”, you will receive a call or email typically, inviting you to a “descoping” meeting. These are to ensure that you have everything covered. Be sure to respond in a timely manner. Review your bid and scope of work thoroughly before your meeting, so you are well prepared. During the meeting be positive and ready to offer suggestions and solutions that may help you and the General to succeed on the project.

If it turns out that there are any scope items that you have overlooked, or if there are questions you don’t readily have answers for, simply say “I’ll get back to you on this.” This will give you time to form a response and avoids shooting from the hip, which can often create problems.

handshakeAssuming everything is in order, you will (eventually) receive your subcontract. When it arrives, read it carefully and thoroughly; all of it. You will need to confirm that the price accounting, the scope of work, schedule, insurance requirements, dates of the plans and specifications and all other details are in line with your expectations. One of the main items of focus is the Scope of Work. Read each Inclusion and Exclusion. If there are any issues you do not agree with, make a note (list) to discuss with your customer. You may need to gather any pertinent emails or backup documents to support your contention of items you feel are incorrect. These often occur as a matter of oversight, and you should approach this phase of the negotiation as such. You don’t want to appear argumentative or contentious, but you do have to know which items are critical; “Hills worth dying on”. You should respectfully request that the contract language be amended to correct any errors, or to capture any inclusions, exclusions or clarifications you think are necessary. Do not simply write the changes into the contract yourself, as this is usually not acceptable. Once the contract is to your satisfaction, sign it and prepare to execute your work.

Conclusion

Hopefully this article points out the value of a well thought-out plan to identifying your best customers to build and grow relationships with. As pointed out, this “relationship-based” approach can be a benefit to both parties. Being seen as a team player and an asset will definitely pay dividends in the long run.

Outdoor Living

Outdoor living is here to stay. According to a recent survey, Americans spend more than $18. 7 billion annually on outdoor home improvement projects. With more than 30 million backyard decks already built in the U. S. , a good portion is spent on decks and railing. If you're among the millions of homeowners whoever will be replacing or building a new deck, porch or patio this year, it's time to do some homework on the many new materials and style options now available.

Don't settle on wood just because you're familiar with it. New composite and vinyl materials are available that will both look good and retain their original quality for years to come. They never need painting, staining or sanding. Gray is no longer the only choice in composite or vinyl decking. Advancements in color science have expanded the color options for decks. Boardwalk Composite Decking, for instance, has a new natural brown option that blends beautifully with outdoor surroundings.

Look beyond standard balusters. While colonial-style balusters have a classic appeal, other options are also available. New on the railing market are glass balusters. Glass balusters provide a clearer view, so to speak, of the surroundings beyond the deck, porch or patio. The glass baluster option for the EverNew Oxford style vinyl railing system is one of the most popular, as it works with any vinyl, composite or wood decking surface in both stair and flat applications. When choosing a railing system, be sure it complies with International Code Council requirements as well.

Ask a professional. Your local lumberyard, retailer and contractor should each be familiar with the multitude of new deck and railing products. Seek their opinions on what materials and styles would work best for your outdoor haven.

Wall Paint

Obviously the first thing you need to do is figure out what to paint on the wall. When I know what I want to paint, I typically follow that up by finding different representations, photos, drawings to use as a reference, or by going to a location to take some pictures that I can use as a model. For example, if I wanted to paint a seascape I might drive around the beach area where I look for objects or scenery I want to include in my painting. Most times I am piecing together a scene to create my mural.

Once you have what you need to put together your scene, painting the background first is essential. I start at the top and work my way down. So I lay down the sky first, then the horizon, where I may have mountains, trees, water or land. After I have my background in I will place my other objects, such as people, cars, roads or whatever the subject may be. Sometimes I hand paint in these objects and sometimes I may use a projector first to cast the image on the wall, trace it out and then hand paint it. A projector is very helpful to maintain the correct proportions and to help in placement of the object.

You may be wondering what medium to use on a wall. I use a mixture of acrylic paint that you can buy in any craft or art supply store and also latex paint that you would purchase by the gallon in a paint or hardware store. Both of these mediums dry swiftly and clean up easily with water. Also, acrylic paint has no fumes so working with it will not bother you during the process. I typically purchase a gallon of extra bright white paint that I mix with the acrylic colors. This will stretch your dollar, because purchasing small tubes of acrylic paint alone can add up swiftly especially if you're painting a large area.

Once you have finished your mural, I suggest painting a clear coat of polyeurothane over it to protect it. Look for a coating that'll not yellow with age. The clear coating allows cleanup in case of dirt or fingerprints.

Trying to Figure out How to Blog Better?

Are you still staring at that white screen waiting for inspiration to blog better?

Blogging can be intimidating because you are trying to create content that brings people to your website and encourages them to do business with you. For online leads, this will be the first impression a new customer gets of your company.

So, how do you create a process for blogging that will rank well and create consistently good reads to entice people to click and check you out? The last thing you want to do is waste a site surfer’s time, there is too much else they can easily be looking at on the screen.

Here’s a few ideas to get the blog juices flowing!

Create an editorial calendar

This sounds like a commitment but can be as simple as writing down a list of topics (whiteboard them), creating a Google Calendar or using a plugin on your site, do whatever it takes to help you blog better.

The folks over at Buffer cover it well here:

Screen Shot 2016-02-13 at 9.37.20 AM

Painting is a somewhat seasonal thing, so its possible to do well-written content around what customers must be thinking about for their homes.

Having a plan laid out helps you to think about topics ahead of time. There’s more to blogging than just sitting down, thinking of something and writing it. Those are the worst blogs to read because you can tell someone hammered out quick, just to get a blog done and off the list. Potential customers showing up at your site may want you to blog better than that. They are not there to appreciate your writing prowess, but your words are the picture you paint for them on first impression.

The best writers we know jot down notes on topics that they can incubate and expand upon later. Capture your ideas in whatever form you can so they don’t get lost. Be thoughtful in your approach, and remember that people like topics that are presented with the intent to help, not sell.

In addition to seeking new leads, blogs are also a great way to keep your current customers thinking about you, particularly when supplemented by a newsletter. Steve Burnett of DYB Coach reminds his clients to stay “top of mind” with customers.

blog better

“It costs 500% more to acquire a new lead. Yet, that’s what we are traditionally taught to do, when we have a goldmine of leads, actually raving fans, that we allow to forget about us. If we create systems and habits to leverage these top 4 avenues, to stay Top of Mind, we’ll build a highly profitable business of A and B clients, without making a sale.”

How do You find Topics to Write about?

At the beginning of of our Roadmap series, we observed:

“Now that most everyone has a built a platform to blog on and published several variations of “Why we are the best painters”, “Which Paint should you use” and a few “Before and After” posts it’s time to rethink content and why we are blogging.”

If you’ve done the hard work of creating good SEO for your site/blog, it’s really important to make sure that when potential customers get there, they actually like the look and feel of what you have to say. You only get one chance to make a first impression and you only have a few seconds to earn a favorable one – meaning, the reader doesn’t click away.

Here are some ways to get inspired to create good original content:

blog betterContent expert Tess Wittler has a list of 52 ideas to stimulate the writer in you. Building ideas into your Editorial Calendar in advance will keep writer’s block from setting in later.

Tess also shares some great suggestions on content writing and newsletters, we’ll be talking to her in an upcoming article to follow up on “How to create a better Newsletter”.

blog betterDarren Slaughter’s advice is simple, and spot on. Check out his video on the left.

“You being the pro that you are, realize it can’t always be about you, make your blog topics appeal to people who are interested in a “change” and see what your blog traffic does!”

Video is one of the most powerful ways to share your information these days. In fact, it’s becoming more the preferred means of how people search for information. So, don’t be afraid to show in addition to telling.

What are some of the questions you get asked by customers? Those are probably some of the same ones that future customers are searching for when they spot your in the search results.

Show it. Tell it. Own it. Blog better.

Create an Outline

Derek Halpern at Social Triggers has a great infographic here about how to layout blog posts for visual appeal.

blog betterRemember, when you create a gap between what people know, and what people want to know, they feel compelled to fill that gap.

So, if you want to pull people into your content, you should create that information gap early in your article.

Source

Put yourself in the shoes of the person who might show up via Google and see what you have written. What do you yourself look for when reading other people’s content? If it’s unreadable, uninteresting or just plain ugly, you click away and regret wasting the time visiting a junky and unhelpful article.

Always go back and flesh out your initial outlines and drafts. People will click on it if they found your topic interesting enough to look at, don’t give them a reason to click away. Once they are gone, they won’t come back. That is the best way to lose a lead before you even get one.

Review, Revise and edit

blog betterWalk away from the piece for a bit. Then come back and read it, out loud. Share it with someone else, ask their opinion. If you are fortunate to have a mentor, ask them to critique, and consider their suggestions without getting offended. Here at BP, we use Google Documents to share drafts and brainstorm.

Publish and share

blog betterBefore you publish a piece, make sure it is optimized for SEO, check your keywords and Meta tags. Also, be sure that your post has a featured image that is appropriately sized so it will appear correctly in social media. That is really important to enticing people to click on the link to begin with.

Bottom Line: Don’t forget who you are writing to in your blogs. You may be sharing them on Facebook, but ultimately the goal is to get it out past your colleagues, friends and family who already know that you are a paint company. You are putting it out there to connect with customers who don’t know you yet, and you are in competition for attention in the world of everything else that they are looking at on their computers or devices.

And that’s what we’ll be talking about next week!

Feel free to leave a link to your latest blog post for others to see in the comments below!

Painting Tips

Painting a car well is what makes the whole artwork look like it was done by a pro. When I started drawing cars I focused to much on painting the cars right instead of looking at the proportions of my car painting. So before you start shade and paint be sure that you are satisfied with the cars lines so far, because once you start paint and shade it will be very hard to change any lines. So if you are absolutely sure, then let's start shading the car.

One big tip here is that you start at the upper left corner (or upper right corner if you are left-handed). This is because it reduces the risk of the car paintings to get all messy. So start from the upper corner! Think about how you need the whole painting to look, try to get a image of it and then you start slowly adding with your pencil this to the background. If you need reference photos then go a head and get those, these will help you not to mess up to much on the background proportions. Don't start with the darkest area, instead start coloring the lighter area of the background of you car paintings, and then go to the darker areas gradually. Then when the upper corner is done, then start moving the center area of the car painting and continue with that area and then next and so on.

A trick for making the car look very well shaded is to exaggerate the contrast. Where you need it to be black, be sure to make it black and not any "grayishblack", this is a little trick lots of gifted artist miss out on. Same goes with the different shades on the car, going from dark to light, be sure to really make the dark areas dark and the light areas light.

And remember to take any breaks from your car paintings, don't rush it and try to get it all done within an hour or so. Take a break after an hour or so and then come back later and you will probably spot any small mistakes that you did not see while you were doing them! And my last tip is the most important one: Be sure to have fun!

Painting Home

Remember, everyone starts as a beginner at painting. Just because you have never painted a house doesn't mean you should not give it a try. The money you save by painting your own house is money you can put into other home improvements. It can also be a fun thing for the whole family to do.

Now we need to choose the colors we want to paint the house. There is a really cool tool online that you can use. http://www. benjaminmoore. com/wrapper_pcv. asp?L=owner&K=intproj&N=intproj Click let's paint. Choose exterior or the interior options. Choose the project closest to yours. Get started and you'll soon know what color you want to paint your house and you'll have a vision of what it is going to look like when you're finished.

Here are any of the basics. Of course the first thing you need to do is wash down the walls of your house. A pressure washer can be rented at almost any rental yard and is the best way to do that. Now go around with a scraper and remove all loose paint and chipped areas. You don't have to scrape the entire wall, but any areas where the surface isn't flat can cause you problems as you paint your house.

Next, figure out your square footage so you can determine the amount of paint you'll need to buy. Buy your paint in 5-gallon pails, rather than gallons to save more money.

Talk to the helper at your local paint store and tell him about your project. They can help you decide on how many brushes and rollers and other items you'll need. You can buy natural or synthetic bristles for oil based paints, but only use synthetic bristles with latex paint. The same rule applies to rollers. Good rollers can run you around $7, but buy high-quality paintbrushes. A good brush for slicing in around edges will run you about $30.

Make sure you purchased any painter's tape. It's blue tape that comes in different widths and is easy to remove without messing up your paint job. That brings us to preparation. Tape off all areas you don't wish to get this color of paint on. If there are large areas to cover, make sure you pick up any rolls of plastic. You can tape the edges of the plastic down over whatever you need to cover.

Don't paint out of the paint cans. First reason is that leaving the paint can open will dry out the paint and make it difficult to apply. Another reason is that your brush or roller picks up dirt and foreign objects, which will end up in your paint and may even change the color as you go along.

Do all of your slicing or trimming in before you paint the walls. Use a 4" brush and with a smooth stroke guide it around the edges where you taped off. Make sure you have plenty of paint on your brush. The biggest mistake people make is trying to stretch the paint too far. Keep drips cleaned up as you go with a small rag. Remember you'll be rolling up to the edge of your cut, so don't worry about that, just make sure you cover the edges well.

Start on the edges of your walls and work your way toward the middle. Most people don't do this and problems can result. If you start and new can of paint in the middle of the wall and there is any difference in the color at all, it will show up there more than it would on the edges. So with each new can of paint you open, start at the edges first.

Dip your roller in water (for Latex) or solvent (for oil-based paint), before you start. Whether you use a pan or a 5-gallon bucket with a screen, make sure you roll it out a little to make sure it isn't dripping. You don't need to go all the way from the top to the bottom as you paint. Do what you can reach.

Apply the paint in a Y or an N pattern, then apply paint in columns up and down smoothing out all the edges or ridges as you go. Again don't try to stretch the paint out, make sure you have enough paint on your roller to give it a good coat. If you are applying more than one coat, make sure the first coat is completely dry before applying a new coat of paint.
Corners are a difficult part to learn to paint. If you aren't careful, this is where you'll see paint drips later. Get as close to corners as you can, but don't scrape the roller against the corner. That will cause drips. If you are unsure, have a paintbrush handy to smooth out drips. That is also a good idea overall. Keep a paintbrush ready for taking care of any drips or ridges you leave behind. Doing this as you go is much easier than trying to fix it after it's dry or partially dry.

Using tray liners for your paint trays will save you a lot of time at cleanup. Soak your brushes when done for a while and they will also be easier to clean. For water based paint, soak in water and for oil based paint soak them in solvent.

I hope any of these tips have been helpful to you. Have confidence that you can do this job yourself. You will appreciate and enjoy it much more knowing that you or you and your family finished the job rather than hiring someone else to do it.

Painting Walls Tips

House paint designed for interior or exterior decoration is sold at your local hardware store, paint shops, and do-it-centers nation wide. Several decorative paint manufactures show a huge range of colors on their charts, which are made by blending the main tints and tones of their collection. It can be very frustrating to be forced into buying gallons of paint when all you need is a sample to test the color. Most paint suppliers will produce small test amounts of a color, especially if it is one of those, which you have requested to be mixed. Virtually all-interior painting jobs today, including walls, ceiling, and woodwork, are done using water-based paint, or oil-based paints.

Most good-quality commercial decorating house paint will last for many years if kept airtight in a sealed metal can. Once opened, however, paint's shelf life is immediately reduced. Color decisions may be affected by the type of paint you have to use, for example, paints that are specifically designed for use on rough exterior walls come in a limited range of shades, although there is a huge variety of colors available for use on interior walls. All paint should be kept in a cool place and out of direct sunlight. The colors with which we surround ourselves will without doubt have an effect on us.
House paint offers an enormous variety of colors, texture and pattern. It transforms the way in which we see them so that even their structures can seem changed. Choosing how to decorate and protect them can be difficult. Paint has the ability to make small structures appear larger and outside ones less overwhelming. The function of a room is a necessary feature when deciding on its color and finish. When picking-out colors, find out how they look both in daylight and at night. So before you go decorating a room or anything else, it is worth taking the time to find out how colors behave in combination with each other.
