Harnesses, Scaffolds, and Lifts: Preventing Falls on the Jobsite

Guess what the most common construction accident is?

fallsThat’s right – falls. Falling is number one on OSHA’s hit parade of the “Fatal Four” accidents in the industry. The thing is, most falls can be avoided by using the proper equipment and preparation.

Even if you are building a “tiny house” a fall from the roof could cause serious injury. Obviously, erecting a multi-story high-rise just raises the stakes, as it were. Fall prevention is the key to minimizing, if not outright eliminating, injuries and fatalities from accidents at height.

Sad Statistics

  • 17% – the percentage of fatal work injuries involving contractors out of all fatal work injuries in 2014.
  • 1 in 5 – worker deaths in 2014 that were in construction.
  • 9% – percentage of fatalities in construction accounted for by falls in 2014.
  • Falling is the leading cause of worker deaths in construction.
  • “Fall protection, construction” (29 CFR 1926.501), was one of the most commonly cited OSHA standard violations.

Start with PPE – Personal Protective Equipment

Fall protection must be available for each and every person who works six feet or more above a lower level. Providing a harness is a good start.

OSHA recommends a full body harness with a shock-absorbing lanyard or retractable lifeline. Anything less is unacceptable. A harness will distribute the forces across the entire body so as to avoid injury to any single body part. The harness must fit properly; stock a variety of sizes to ensure everyone who will work at height has access to a harness that fits.

Once at height, the harness must be clipped to the lifeline or other anchor, which itself must be anchored above the point of operation to a structural member that can support a minimum dead weight of 5,400 pounds. If any lifeline, safety belt, or lanyard is ever subjected to “in-service” loading (in other words, it stopped a fall) it must be taken out of service and never again used for employee safeguarding.

Before you start thinking about the expense of replacing a lifeline or lanyard, consider the expenses related to employee injury or death.

Safety with Scaffolding

yellow-scaffoldingScaffolding, while common in construction, creates a major safety risk when used incorrectly. Scaffolds present opportunities for falling, being struck by equipment or an object, being blown by the wind, and electrical hazards.

Best practices for preventing these types of accidents include:

  • Inspect the scaffolding before it is placed into service. It must meet OSHA requirements for accessing and leaving the scaffolding, the work areas must be completely planked and decked, and the scaffold must be properly guyed and tied-off to the structure.
  • Fall protection must be used.
  • Guardrails must be installed.
  • Toeboards must be installed to prevent and avoid falling objects.
  • Higher scaffolds must have wind screens.
  • There must be a 10-foot clearance between any power lines and anything on the scaffold.
  • Stay within the published load limit of the scaffold.

Each day the scaffolding is in use it must be inspected by a competent person, someone who has been trained in building and using the scaffold. Any defective parts must immediately be replaced. Until then the scaffold must remain out of service.

The scaffold must be capable of supporting its own weight plus four times the maximum intended weight without settling or displacement.

Using Lifts

lift_groupIf scaffolding is not appropriate or simply not needed, a lift may be the next best thing. A lift or aerial platform can provide a stable working surface.

Lifts include aerial ladders, extensible boom platforms, vertical towers, articulating boom platforms, and any combination of these. In all cases, workers must:

  • Stand firmly on the floor of the basket, and shall not sit or climb on the edge of the basket or use planks, ladders, or other devices for a work position.
  • Wear a body belt and attach a lanyard to the boom or basket when working from an aerial lift.
  • Shall not exceed boom and basket load limits specified by the manufacturer.

As the Ford® Motor Company has stated for years, “Safety is job number one.”

Construction sites are inherently hazardous places that commonly use lifts and scaffolding to place workers at height. Besides providing harnesses for each person leaving the ground, all scaffolding and lifts must be erected, operated, and inspected per the manufacturer’s instructions and to OSHA standards. In all cases, training is your best defense against accidents.

Garden Decor

So, are you looking for a way to add to your garden dcor? Want something everlasting, nature-based or stylized? There are many things that you can add to your outdoor living space to make it comfortable and inviting and still provide you with few hours of work on maintenance. Here are 7 ways to add dcor to your garden.

Tip 1: unadulterated Is Best. When adding products outdoors, from furniture to statuary, you should always look towards the most organic of products. When you do this, youll allow for something that fits in the landscape, not something that sticks out in it.

Tip 2: Flow Is Essential. If you've a large garden or landscape, you can create a flow throughout it to make it a much more livable and organic environment. So, as an example, a pathway leading through the garden is important as it provides for a way to move through the area enjoying all of the principle sights along the way.

Tip 3: Overboard Isnt Good. Over crowding a space with too much dcor or even too a multitude of plants is bad business. Instead, look for a more nature-based landscape component. Overcrowding plants can cause them to eventually die or take over the entire garden. To much dcor can make it look cluttered instead of lavish.

Tip 4: Use Lines. Lines from your home or your edging can help to create a lovely look in the garden. The roof line of the house may be a line that leads the eye to something excellent at the end. Use the lines that you've to create a flow to the eye.

Tip 5: Charm Means Theme. While you dont need a specific theme throughout your garden dcor, you should look towards the same or similar offerings. So, as an example, if you place a white metal table under your trees to have a restful place, make sure that the chairs that go with it match it. Add a white picket fence or other matching pieces to tie certain areas of the garden together as well.

Tip 6: Uphold it. a large amount of of the aspects in a garden are going to need any upkeep. If you pull your weeds, dont let this be overshadowed by the fact that you've not washed that white possessions in a year. Keep up on broken or misplaced things as well. In the duration of harsh winter months, make sure to put as much as possible in storage that may be broken.

Tip 7: Garden dcor is not done without the look for lovely patio items. Allow it to mesh with the settings that you've created too. So, as an example, in a woodsy area, look towards an organic, lovely product such as teak to keep it looking as if it belongs there.

The aforementioned points can help to contribute to a lovely and fashionable garden dcor that is everlasting, easy to manage and a welcoming place to call your own.

Password Management and Security

How many passwords do you have, or even better to ask, how many different passwords do you have? Do you use the same combination of your pet’s names and your birth year over and over?

passwordPassword protection is a big deal these days. It used to be that the faulty thought “no one would target little ole me” was somewhat true.  I recently read the life story of Kevin Mitnick,  a “hacker” that now runs a successful security company. He used social engineering a lot, and while he was very clever, there were many examples of how we can be our own worst enemy when it comes to online security. When you begin to understand why hackers want to access your website, emails and other frequently used sites, you can better understand the need be cyber safe.

Here are 7 bad password habits you need to break now

As an administrator and owner of multiple websites, there are a few things I see happening all too often when I am dealing with others and I thought I’d take a minute to share some of my favorite practices.

Password Management

I use Lastpass for my personal and 1Password at work, just cause I like to try new things and I keep the two separate. They both work great, you only need to remember on very strong password, they will auto fill the username and password on every site you visit and generate new, unique and safe passwords for you.

Website Logins

If you are managing your own website, you probably have given others access at some time for one reason or another, I know, because I have the logins for an inordinate amount of sites, but, hey, I’m trustworthy, right? Until someone has access to my computer or info.

Do not ever give anyone your user name and password!

Set up a new user with the proper (needed) rights and give them their own login. When their work is done, delete the user, or change the password if you think they made need access later. You can use the vault features in LastPass to share passwords as well.

 Social Media Logins

Same thing as with passwords, make someone a manager of your Facebook page, rather than handing over your information. Have you ever wondered about logging into sites using your Google or Facebook login? There are some pros and cons, here is a video that explains it well.

 Email Accounts

GMail has a cool feature called “delegate” in email. You can give an assistant access to be able to respond to emails on your behalf, yet still be able to restrict their access if needed. You can use Google’s 2 Step Verification to make sure that even with your password, access is blocked. If you frequently use other computers to check your gmail, make sure you completely log out.

Two Factor Authentication

While Google 2 Step will cover most needs, to be extra secure, enable two factor authentication on other sites you use.

Be a Safe Clicker!

I have seen many very smart people fall for email scams and phishing attempts. If someone you don’t know, but may be in your social circle or email contacts sends you a link to “open this doc” or view this “Dropbox folder”, take a moment to think about it. Don’t ever click on a link to a third party (bank, credit card, Amazon, Paypal, etc) from an email or link on a site, go to the site and log in. Those darn crooks are getting pretty good at mimicking sites and once you enter your user name and password, they will make your life hell!

Take a few moments to review and organize your digital wallet. Leave a comment below if you have comments or suggestions.

How To Decorate

If you are looking for great ways to decorate your home or office, then you know as well as I do that you have nearly countless options. There are so many ways to decorate that it can easily be very overwhelming to find the right things that are in the right budget. As an interior designer, I am often meeting with clients who are overwhelmed with their options and who are having trouble staying within a budget. I often suggest art posters to these kinds of clients.

Art posters is a surprising answer for many of my clients that come with questions. They are surprised because they have never thought about the great option that art posters can be. So I suggest art posters and then I show them the samples of art posters that I have all over my own home and office. There are a few main reasons why I suggest decorating with art posters.

First, I love seeing people decorate with art posters because they are inexpensive. Not that you should always choose what is inexpensive for your home or office, but if you are anything like me, then your tastes and personal style are constantly changing. If this is the case, decorating with art posters is a great way to decorate for a time when you know that your tastes will change soon enough. So often people buy expensive pieces of beautiful art and then change their minds within a couple of years. Buying art posters is a great way to stay in a reasonable price range and to give yourself the freedom to explore new options for art later.

Another great thing about art posters is that they come in such a large variety. You can be looking for almost anything and find what you're looking for in the form of an art poster. I love that. I love that a client can be looking for a beach scene or for art that looks like it came from Paris and they can mostly find art posters representing what they like.

If you are trying to decorate and you think that art posters might be an option for you, then head to an art posters store and check out your options. It is a good idea to have any thoughts about what you're looking for first. Try to know what style and colors you are looking for. The decision making process will be much easier if you know what kind of art posters to seek.

Bedroom Decor

Designing the space in your home can be some of the most rewarding work that you can undertake. Your decor can reflect your spirit and style, and done correctly, it can speak to your very soul.

The most intimate space, and perhaps the most important, is the bedroom. Unfortunately, it is most often overlooked as it is not regularly seen by visitors to your home. Too often the rooms meant for entertaining guests take precedence over those nurturing private havens.

Choosing the theme of the bedroom decor can vary as much as personal style and depend upon the desired effect; calming or stimulating, meditative or invigorating, an intellectual retreat or a sensual hideaway. It is entirely up to you.

Beyond choosing the wall colors and furniture, you have important considerations to make concerning the textiles: rugs, pillows, and bedding. The sumptuousness of these will directly affect the comfort of the room. The luxuriousness of sleeping on fine linens can not be overstated. The bedding is one area that you do not need to skimp on when you are furnishing your own nurturing space.

To properly outfit your bed, you will need a substantial mattress, a mattress pad, sheets, a blanket, a duvet or comforter, and pillows. The pillows' firmness is entirely a matter of personal preference, but be sure they are of adequate number. The sheets, blankets, and duvet all provide an opportunity to contribute to the overall decor of the room, as well as to your physical comfort.

Some bedrooms' decor are built around a fabulous comforter's pattern and/or colors, while others leave the bed linens to play the role of accent pieces in the scheme. There is no right or wrong answer here, but be sure that you do not fall into the trap of purchasing something for its looks alone. These pieces are to be functional as well. Too often people find themselves sleeping, or attempting to sleep, on inferior quality. Your days depend on your nights' rest - splurge on fine bed linens.

Remember that other than your comfort and peace of mind, there really are no rules when it comes to creating your private sanctuary. Make it your own.

Interior Decorating

There are many different ideas for interior Christmas decorating. Interior Christmas decorating is an important part of most people's holiday festivities. For many people, the interior decorations are what defines the season of Christmas. Your home will feel warm with the proper interior Christmas decorating scheme. There are a variety of decorating ideas on the market today, but the best way to complete your interior Christmas decorating is to make the items yourself or with your family. The holiday season is about spending time together, and making things to warm your home will only help signify that to your family. There are several great ideas for your interior Christmas decorating needs.

Make yours the perfect holiday home with interior Christmas decorating

• First, create a diorama of bears or dolls dressed in festive seasonal clothes. You could put a small tree with little presents in your display. This is a great way to get your kids involved in the decorating process. Just be sure you don't use a favorite security object, as it might prove difficult to disassembly the diorama throughout the course of the season.

• Second, meet your interior Christmas decorating needs by creating bows from Christmas print ribbon and putting them in various places around your house including your curtains.
• Third, hang stockings throughout your house, even if you know they aren't your stuffing stockings. It offers a festive feel to your home.

Next, use fabric paint and a traditional white table cloth to make a holiday patterned table cloth. This is another great activity to do with your little ones. Just be sure to express to them that they are not allowed to paint on the tablecloth on a year round basis. Next, dress your bathroom for the holidays by attaching ornaments and other decorations(of the unbreakable type) to a clear shower curtain with a hot glue gun. Another decorating idea is to get your houseplants into the swing of the season by hanging ornaments on them after you decorate your tree. For a quick ornament idea, try hanging a cookie cutter with a bit of Christmas ribbon. To help with your decoration as well as your Christmas trivia knowledge, place a basket of seasonal books on your coffee table or end table. It will look festive, and it may just help you win a quick family game sometime.

Interior Christmas decorating does not have to be difficult or expensive with ideas like these.

How We Built a Hiring Process That Works

For us folks here in the North, it’s that time of year when the exterior work is rolling in and we need to staff-up to meet the demand. Every painting company needs a healthy amount of guys and gals on hand to cover the seasonal increase in workload, and a solid hiring process will insure that you have employees ready to go when needed.

painter

IF AT FIRST YOU DON’T SUCCEED

For years, guys who could show up on time, do the work required without complaint, and conduct themselves professionally were few and far between.   We would hire people, they would flake out or be fired for non-performance, and we’d be stuck without enough help. This problem prevented us from growing and was a huge drain on my time [and faith in humanity].

HOW WE CREATED A SOLUTION

After this went on for a while, I resolved to change the way this worked in my business so I came up with a hiring process that we used for the remainder of my tenure with my company (before moving on to do different things).

Our hiring process looked something like this:

  1. Generate lots of online job postings
  2. Prescreen Applicants
  3. In-Person Interviewing, Hiring, and Onboarding

WHERE TO FIND YOUR APPLICANTS

Many people underestimate just how many applicants you need to get to actually generate a few good hires – there are a lot of undesirables (people who no-show interviews, no-show on day 1, or don’t have their life together) in the unskilled labor pool and you have to do a lot of sifting to get to the good candidates.

We mainly had luck with Craigslist, Indeed, our state’s local talent bank and sites like Painter Job Hub. You should be looking to get 10 names for every one hire that you make. Anything short of that leaves you with less-than-optimal options. This means putting in hours on the front end to cast that wide net, but it pays large dividends once you’ve brought the right people on board.

KNOW WHO YOU WANT TO APPLY

Our ideal candidate was someone searching for more of an apprenticeship than a ‘fast money’ job. We let prospective applicants know we were looking to invest in them. We focused on finding candidates that would want to grow with us.

Here was a typical job posting that we used:

Job posting for painters employees/ subs:

Click here for sample template you could use.

Job posting for painter employees only:

Click here for sample template you could use.

We pay $12-14/hour depending on experience: New guys all start at $12/ hr. Through trial and error, we found that paying less than that (in our area) didn’t bring in the caliber of people we were looking for.

PRESECREEN YOUR APPLICANTS

You have to prescreen candidates before spending time interviewing them. After receiving a resume, the initial call looked something like this:

  • Build rapport
  • Why is the candidate looking for a job?
  • Is candidate willing to work 40 hours/ week (including weekends if necessary)?
  • Is candidate allergic to bees/ latex?
  • Does candidate own a car and have a valid license? (catching a ride from someone doesn’t count)
  • Is the candidate able to pass a drug screen?
  • Does the candidate have any prior felony convictions?
  • If answers satisfactory, schedule an interview for the next day – text and email location and time

hiring processAt every step in the process, striking while the iron is hot and while you have the candidates’ attention is extremely important. That’s why I always kept the ‘time-to-next-step’ short and within sight. I’ve interviewed candidates for low-skill positions and candidates for high-skill positions and the low-skill candidates usually tend to have a shorter horizon and lose interest if the next step (reward) is not within line of sight.

Most of the people I’ve interviewed respond best to texts or phone calls over email. Many potentially good candidates don’t check email or would have to go to the library to check their email, but everyone could send and receive a text message or take a phone call. After the initial call, I would text them the details.

INTERVIEW IN PERSON

As part of the hiring process, interviews should happen one to two days after you pre-screen a candidate but no later than that. I always set up my interviews for the same day and time block. All interviews were scheduled to be 30 minutes long.

I had a lot of no-shows for interviews before I started texting the meeting location/ details to confirm the interview the day before. Always require confirmation – less people will show up for interviews if you don’t ask for a “got it” or “see you then” confirmation text from them.

I put together a list that includes some prequalifying questions as well as our in-person interview questions. You want to use the questions as tools to get a feel for the personality of the candidate and their willingness to learn. They will be part of a team and you will be working closely with them in many cases. I always started out by talking about the job and what would be expected of them; then the second half of the interview can be spent asking them questions.

When interviewing a candidate, I’m making a determination on where the candidate sits in the following areas:

  • Does the candidate meet the pre-qualifying criteria for the position? (confirm that the answers received on the initial call are still true)
  • Will the wage and hours of this job meet the candidates needs or will he/she quit/ be fired after the first week when we figure out he/she isn’t earning enough to feed the family/ drive to work?
  • Attitude (does the candidate speak poorly of previous employers, general outlook – has a positive outlook or has a negative outlook and may tend to complain more)
  • Coachability (can I teach this candidate or will he/she be closed to feedback)
  • Is this candidate reliable? (what might past employers say about his/her performance, look at job history, amount of time spent on jobs, number of jobs, does this candidate stick with a job or does he/she move around a lot)
  • Self-awareness (can this candidate identify his/ her own strengths weaknesses, can they critique themselves, do they know where they stand)
  • Intended trajectory/ goals (what does this candidate want to achieve, where do they want to be in a year, consider how this job will get them there, is this position a good fit for them)

HIRE, HIRE, HIRE

hiring processHiring decisions were delivered the day after the interview. You want to keep the turnaround quick, while the interest is still there, but you want to make candidates feel like they earned they job, as opposed to gifting it to them at the end of the interview.

The day after the interview, when you call to offer the candidates the job, setup an appointment to come in and get on payroll for that same afternoon. It won’t feel real and they won’t feel committed until they do this.

Always over-hire – you are going to have a lot of names at the beginning – people will drop at every stage of the hiring process and some after they are hired – don’t overexpose yourself to the risks of a new hire quitting or being fired. It’s going to happen, so plan for it as part of your hiring process.

This hiring process worked for us but it’s certainly not the only way to do things – have a process that works for you?

Let us know in the comments below.

Paint Prices

Paint ball is growing to be a very popular game for all ages. There is lot of different things that you can do with a paint ball gun. Paint ball is considered a sport because it does involve a lot of physical activity. The object of the game is to shoot small balls of paint out of a paint ball gun and successfully hit your target.

There is a lot of running and jumping when you are playing with a paintball gun. There is a lot of physical movement to try and avoid being hit by the paint ball pellets. The person that is most covered with paint is none the less the loser of the game.

There are a lot of places that you can go to play with your paintball gun safely. There are so many obstacles that you have to go through when you are playing this sport. You can play on a course or you can play this fun sport in your own back yard.

There are many things that you are going to need in order to play paint ball. It is not going to be cheap to play this sport, as most of the equipment is costly. You will need to have a paint ball gun, paint balls, air for your tank, paint ball mask, and of course the will to have fun. You can get most of these items at a sporting goods store in just about any area.

There are a few rules for paintball. The first thing to remember is that you has to play safe. You do not need anyone to get hurt when playing after all it is all in fun. Masks have to be worn at all times to make sure that your eyes and face are protected. You should always know what you are shooting at and never just shoot at anything. One thing to know is that the paintball guns need to be tested on a regular basis.

Paintball is one of the most fun and safest sports there is today. As long as people play along with the rules and wear the correct safety gear, anyone can have a lot of fun and exercise playing paintball. There is no reason why you should not get started on this fun and exciting game. You can have fun while you burn some calories at the same time.

Children and adults can play. You should never shoot at animals or people that are not playing the game. Although this is just a game, a paintball gun can potentially harm someone that is not expecting a hit and does not have safety gear. Always play safe and fair and it will be a fun sport to play.

What Does “Licensed, Bonded, and Insured” Mean for You?

As a painting contractor, one of your main concerns is building trust with your clients. After all, you’ll be spending lots of time inside their homes. Making sure you are “licensed, bonded, and insured” is the first step in building that trust. But what exactly does it mean for you? Let’s break it down.

Licensed

Most industries require various licenses before they allow individuals to conduct business. Painting contractors are not required to obtain a license in every state, but may be required to register with the appropriate state department. Sometimes painters are licensed the same way as regular contractors, and sometimes they need a different license. And occasionally, the city or county you live in will have its own regulations for painting contractors. Verify whether or not you need a license with your local and state contractor licensing departments. (“Bonded and insured” is just as effective a phrase if your state doesn’t require a license.)

Bonded

“Bonded” means that the painter has purchased a surety bond, a measure that protects the consumer. Surety bonds are an agreement between three parties:

  • Principal – the person purchasing the bond
  • Obligee – the entity that requires the bond purchase, usually government
  • Surety – the company backing the bond and providing the line of credit if the principal does not uphold their obligations

To put it simply, the surety bond can provide reimbursement if the painting contractor violates any of the conditions of their bond. Purchasing a bond is the principal’s agreement to adhere to all laws—local, state, and federal—that govern their industry. If you don’t, the client can file a claim against your surety bond. If the claim is proven, the bond can reimburse the client for the amount of the claim up to the full bond amount. For example, if a client files a $6,000 claim on a $50,000 surety bond, the surety will pay the full amount if the claim is proven.

Licensed-bonded-and-insuredSome states might require painting contractors to get a license like many other kinds of contractors. In that case, you’ll purchase a contractor license bond. You’ll have to include proof that you are insured and bonded when applying for your license. Regulations vary widely, so contact the department that handles contractor licensing in your state for the best information.

If you’re not required by law to buy a surety bond, you can choose the bond you buy. Two popular bonds for client protection are business service bond and employee theft bonds. Cleaning companies, pest control companies, and other professionals that spend time in clients’ homes buy business service or employee theft bonds.

The purchase of a surety bond is an indication to clients that the painter has their best interests in mind and is willing to take additional steps to ensure they are protected. Verify your surety bond requirements with your state, county, and city before purchase. Whether or not you purchase one may be up to you, but check your local laws first.

Insured

Business insurance is different from surety bonds because it offers protection for the business, while bonds protect the consumer. Painting contractors usually purchase liability insurance, workers’ compensation insurance, and commercial vehicle insurance. Clients love a well-insured contractor; it shows trustworthiness and dependability and ensures they won’t be responsible if an accident occurs.

Being “licensed, bonded, and insured” is an easy way to convey to potential clients that your painting business can be trusted. You didn’t skirt around any laws to save yourself a dime and you put your clients’ well-being first. The phrase can be used when marketing your business, and you can tell your customers why you’re bonded: for them! Begin at the beginning when establishing yourself as an honest and upstanding businessperson—get licensed, bonded, and insured.

Home Paint

Buying a home is a huge investment. You should use a checklist when sizing up potential homes. In this article, we cover a home buying checklist for paint and stucco.

Paint and Stucco

The exterior of a home generally makes the biggest impression when you first view a potential buying opportunity. Several homebuyers, however, generally make the mistake of looking at color schemes as the principal issue. In truth, a close review of the exterior of the prospective home can tell you a lot about the quality of the structure.

A person selling a home is not stupid. Before putting a home on the market, they are going to take steps to spiff it out to raise buyer interest and the rate you're willing to pay. There is nothing devious about such conduct. It is natural to want to put your best foot forward and a person selling a home is not going to act differently. This is why you want to take a close look at the exterior paint and stucco on a home.

1. The first thing to look for is peeling or flaking of paint on the exterior walls. If you notice this in an apparent place on a wall, run for the hills because the house needs a total repaint. Typically, you're not going to find such apparent problems. Instead, you need to poke around behind bushes, up under roof overhangs and in nooks and crannies. If you find problems of this sort, it tends to mean the paint job on the home was not applied correctly. Once these problems start occurring, you can count on them getting worse over time.

2. The second thing to look for is stains around perforations in the paint. For instance, look for an area where bolts or nails penetrate a painted surface. If you notice rust around the hole, you may be seeing an indication of poor maintenance. Even worse, you may be seeing an indication of a water drainage problem. Investigate such occurrences very carefully.

3. With stucco homes, you're generally going to find some cracking do to earth movement and temperature changes. As long as these areas are relatively small, you should not have problems patching them for a nominal price. The more massive problem, however, is if you find stains or soft spots on the bottom section of a stucco wall. This can mean there are problems with the drainage screen behind the stucco wall and water is not getting out. If water is not getting out, the stucco will continue to degrade and you may have a mold problem at some point. Both situations might be very high-priced to fix.

When checking out perspective home buying opportunities, the exterior of the home should be looked at very closely. In this case, the merits of the home all come down to the details.

Outdoor Living

What started out as a yard in the great American dream has evolved into an outdoor living space, encompassing dining areas, living rooms and even play areas that go way beyond the swingsets of the 1950's. These spaces extend the livable area of your home, while saving you money and increasing your home's value. This is particularly true in the Southwest, where bug-free, temperate outdoor conditions predominate for much of the year. In fact, a little further south, Latin American homes often blur the distinction between indoor and outdoor spaces – a bedroom might open to the garden or the dining room might call for outdoor eating all year 'round.

To take advantage of the wisdom of outdoor spaces, it's important to remember that you'll be more likely to use them if they are close to the entrances of your home. One exception to that rule, however, are retreat spaces – sanctuaries you'll want to remove from the house to create a sense of privacy and solace.

One of the most popular outdoor spaces is the outdoor dining room/kitchen. Plans for outdoor dining rooms can range from the basic to the outrageous, depending on your inclination and budget. Merely placing tables and chairs to take advantage of (or avoid) the sun, with a barbeque set up nearby, may be all you need. Even so, consider accents to dress up the space, like container gardens and solar-powered lights.

If you want to go for broke, install an entire outdoor kitchen with weatherproof cabinets and outdoor-ready appliances. Often the cabinets and appliances form the "walls" or boundaries of the space which you can then dress up with Spanish tile and a dining set. Use a pergola to provide shade and some cover.

Another popular option is the outdoor living room. Some families create not one, but two outdoor living spaces, one on the east side of the house and one on the west side. When it's hot out, they always have a shady respite, and during cooler weather they can soak up the sun's rays all day long. Planting greenery around these areas will help defray cooling costs in the summer and provide privacy and protection from the wind. Consider making these spaces more cozy with weatherproof fabrics, rattan furniture and pillow-draped seat walls. And to add interest, build your outdoor living room around a focal point such as a view, water feature or even a fireplace.

There are many reasons to consider creating outdoor living spaces. They not only raise your property value, but can be a place to entertain or simply an easy way to enjoy the great outdoors without having to leave your home.

Kitchen Design

There is no place in the house that is used more generally than the kitchen. The kitchen is the nerve center of a family's operations; meals are created there, snacks prepared, generally it is the area where the family will get together. It is also one of the most important rooms in the home in terms of determining the value, and is a vital area when company comes to visit on their impression of your lifestyle. It is very important, then, that kitchens be modeled not only for convenience and function but also for great visual appeal.

A good kitchen design will mean that everything, from the kitchen cabinets to the furniture, will complement the look of the kitchen as well as function in such a way that the flow of operations in the area is ensured. Any piece of equipment that sticks out too far or doors that do not close properly will prove highly annoying at the least, and at the worst may also prove to be dangerous.

When you are designing a kitchen, space is by far the key area to focus on. There needs to be adequate space for the storage of food and equipment, easy access to those spots, a good and functional sink, plenty of countertop workspace, and the whole thing should be easy to clean. One method that people use to determine the right amount of space in their kitchen area is known as the triangle of the kitchen, or the work triangle. This is the area in your kitchen where the most of work will take place; imagine a line that starts at the sink and extends to the stove top, then down to the refrigerator, and back to the sink. The sides of this triangle should be about 26 feet long when added together, and no one side should be less than four feet or more than nine feet.

Remember as you design your storage space that you will accumulate more tools in the kitchen as time goes by. Everyone inevitably realizes that there's something important in their kitchen that they do not possess, and when you get that new food processor or blender you will want to have somewhere to store it. So, do not just plan for what you've at the moment; plan for the future as well.

The measurements and the placing of the various crafted parts of the kitchen are also very important. Make sure that all the doors and drawers of your cabinets both open and shut without banging into each other or into pieces of equipment in the kitchen.

Open kitchens are the style these days, and with good reason. The less walls that are in the kitchen, the less potential there's for food stains. Also, easy access to the kitchen is good for any cook who also is responsible for monitoring the activities of children in the house. Any walls that you do put in, as well as the roof, need to be coated with a durable, stain-resistant paint. You should also make sure that the kitchen is well ventilated; windows are a must, and many will have a door nearby. Even the best cooks sometimes leave a pot on too long!

Paying careful attention when designing your kitchen is a massive step in making sure that you love your work space for years to come.

National Painting Week

Many of our readers have created their own Paint it Forward programs. Josh and his team at Allbright Painting is a great example. Another is Neubert Painting, they have been serving their community for years.

Hats off to these and other businesses who have the resources (time, money and staff) to undertake this level of service project. For many contractors though, this is just not feasible. Thanks to Sherwin-Williams, there is an option. Contractors can contact their local store and get involved in a local community project.

For National Painting Week 2015, Sherwin-Williams employees across the U.S. and Canada will dedicate their time, effort and Sherwin-Williams products to refresh non-profits, churches, schools and other deserving organizations that help make a difference. From Alaska to Florida, we’ll be picking up paint brushes to refresh local community hubs both inside and out. This year, Sherwin-Williams is proud to partner with the local affiliates of the Boys & Girls Club of America and Canada. Many local Sherwin-Williams stores and districts have teamed up with more than 100 clubs across North America for a worthwhile painting project that will help beautify the space where young people most in need start on the path to a bright future.

Home Decorators

Not all of us are "do-it-yourselfers". And not all of us have the money to finance on classy furniture. However, each one of us can use any imagination to bring out the beauty even from the most shabby and old looking objects we can find around us.

So what one can really do is to think creatively. To use things in any ways they were not intended to. Or to buy relatively cheap items which when enhanced can really take their effects in beautifying your home.

Here are any home decoration tips that can benefit you in a fashion that you would save considerable money:

Take that freshness from your house and start by thorough clean up. This technique is sure a simple method yet when used, your house will take a new sight again. Also, consider your lightning. Often, poor lightning spoils the loveliness of the house (even if your furniture cost lots of dollars to produce).

Add interest to your room by using splashes of colors. These don't always have to match your household furnishings but be sure that colors are in good combinations.

Change the looks of your house with gallons of paints. Paints can be applied in mostly all corner and mostly all wall of the house. For flooring, paints had been used for a number of years now to hide imperfections, scratches and the likes. You can make a good deal of use from them if you applied your floor with paints and patterns.

Too few people may have knowledge of this but did you know that wallpapers (not the vinyl type) could do great for your floor? Paste them with wallpaper glue and coat with around 5 layers of polyurethane. Looks amazing and will hold up well for years. Plus, the savings that it guarantees.

Paint can also work well with metal and wood furniture. Yet keep in mind a plan that will balance painted walls and floor with your household items. (Unless, you would need to make a circus tent out of your home. ) The trick here is to limit your choice of color with only two to three palettes ( a deep one and a light one may do!).

Seek treasures! Go to garage sales and see what you may find. There are good reasons why you should buy. The primary of which is that you save largely for furniture that could have cost hundreds of dollars when bought from furniture shops, only that they are far older than what you may buy from the shops. Besides, there are lots to choose from a garage sale. While everything may date back to several years ago, you can still make precious items from them.

Fabrics can add character to home decorating. Set the theme with your sheets starting from the bed to the walls. However, you may also prefer choosing a variety of fabrics to create unique designs. Be careful though not to trip on over designing. Nonetheless, it would be a good idea to echo something on your wall that will relate to your over-all fabric concept.

If you need any touches of nature into your home, you can place a selection of plants that will not outmode your entire house arrangement.

As you can see, the trick with home decoration does not solely depend on the budget that you can outline for your project. But on your ability to think creatively and to put that thinking into workable home decoration plans.

Famous Interior Designers

The Audi brand has taken home quite a huge share of the awards that were given during the 2006 Auto Interior Show. In fact, this brand's three vehicles – the Audi Q7, Audi A3, and the Audi S8 – took home an award each from the said show. The 2006 Auto Interior Show is all about those vehicles that hold outstanding design in its interior as well as exceptional quality. Voting is done by media involved in coverage of the auto industry. For this year, the Auto Interior of the Year Awards was part of the Ward's Auto Interiors Show.

Produced by the Volkswagen AG, the Audi Q7 is a new vehicle in the market. Production for this vehicle starts next year. It has been built as a sport utility vehicle that holds four doors and has been built on the AWD platform. Its power comes from a 4. 2 liter V8 engine and works with a six speed automatic transmission system. In spite of it being a newcomer to the automobile market, it took home the news media award for the Premium Priced Crossover Utility Vehicle (CUV) category. Its competition, the Mercedes Benz M class, Infiniti FX, Lexus RX, Volvo XC90, and Porsche Cayenne, better watch out for this one.

Another Audi vehicle that took home an award was the Audi A3. It received the news media award for the Popular Priced Car category. Since its introduction, the Audi A3 has been a constant favorite among media people because it held interiors that were stylish and very luxurious. This vehicle has been in production since 1996 and has been produced as a hatchback that held either three doors or five.

A car with a good combination of sounds, the Audi S8 took home the news media award for the Best Sound System. This was all because of the new Bang and Olufsen audio system that it held inside its cabin. Built on the FF and AWD platforms, the Audi S8 is a full size luxury car and has been roaming the streets and roads since 1994.

Minimalist Design Tips by Ottawa Residential Painters

Painting Contractors Challenge You to Think beyond Black and White

When minimalistic design is discussed, the colours black and white often come to mind. It still holds true that this contrast is a popular choice, especially in kitchens and modern homes. However, Ottawa residential painters have some other minimalistic design ideas for you to consider:

Introduce Rich Accent Colours

Add some flavour to your contemporary ambiance. Minimalism can easily be seen as boring monotony, so make it fun and colourful! Painting contractors encourage you to enhance your minimalist design with rich colours, such as burnt orange, red, or eggplant. Why not paint an accent wall in a daring colour to achieve a dramatic visual effect in your home?

Pick Neutrals Instead of Whites

Painting contractors often see plain, old white walls as the default choice for many homes—but there are so many more choices. Neutral paint colours, for example, have a more calming effect than whites. The choices that Ottawa’s residential painters can provide you with are endless. Consider incorporating neutral colours in your living room, kitchen, foyer, bedrooms, and bathrooms.

Create a Focal Point

Ottawa residential painters suggest transforming your room by creating a focal point. This can easily be done by adding an accent colour or by painting a trim as your point of focus. Highlight your favourite décor piece and consider switching it up seasonally to reflect the latest colour trends. Pick a dramatic accent colour and paint your floating shelves, for example, or the mantel of your fireplace. It’s a small change with big impact.

Experiment with Geometric Wall Decorations

You may also be interested in experimenting with shapes. Abstract minimalist painted wall art can have quite the effect on a room, whether you decide on geometric shapes or other patterns. Choose your colours wisely, and consult with your painting contractors how best to achieve clean paint edges. Ottawa residential painters may also be able to produce a digital rendering of your space, which will help you visualize your space and make your colour choices easier.

Have fun with your minimalistic design, and find the courage to experiment with colours and ideas! If you’re still not entirely sure how to transform your place or where to get started, contact your local painting contractors today for a free consultation and estimate.

Does an Injury have to happen at Work to be Eligible for Workers’ Compensation?

In the circumstances that you suffer injuries while at work or fall ill due to the nature of your work, you could be entitled to benefit from workers’ compensation benefits. Workers’ compensation refers to a kind of an insurance policy that is a statutory requirement and one that provides medical benefits and wage replacements for those employees or workers who get ill or injured in the course of their work. The eligible workers/employees get compensated for their medical bills and lost work regardless of the party in fault and in exchange such employees/workers relinquish their rights of suing their employers for work related injuries and illnesses. In order to be eligible for this insurance, you must be a legitimate employee of the company in question that has the workers’ comp insurance and the injuries sustained must be directly caused by work related duties or those related to your work. Below are some of these requirements in more detail.

Does an Injury have to happen at work?

Manual worker is injured during drilling on the ladder

Manual worker is injured during drilling on the ladder

The answer is yes as you are always entitled to the workers’ compensation benefits as long as you are carrying out your work related duties. There are specific circumstances that illustrate when a worker is entitled to workers compensation attorney. These are; when you leave your work place to go out to pick some paint supplies and get into an accident, when you get injuries from using tools or while attending the company functions you suffer injuries you will be entitled to enjoy these benefits. However, if you suffer injuries when coming to or leaving work and during your lunch hour break you will not be eligible for the workers’ comp.

What if your Employer doesn’t have Workers Comp?

what_workers_compensation_insurance_typically_covers-400bIt is a statutory requirement that all employers have self-insurance or workers’ compensation insurance. In the event that you get injured at work and find out that your employer does not have this insurance, there are generally two causes of action you can take. First, you can opt to sue the employer in court for compensation or secondly, you can file your workers’ compensation claim with the special fund your state has set aside to handle workers’ compensations claims for the uninsured workers. It would be wise to contact a workers’ compensation lawyer in order to increase the chances of your claims success.

Every state has different workers’ compensation laws that provide injured workers with various types of compensation benefits. There are some laws that provide for permanent impairment, vocational rehabilitation, weekly compensation and medical treatment payment benefits. Moreover, there are certain groups of workers that although they meet the eligibility criteria above, they still do not qualify to get the workers’ compensation benefits. There are some workers who are exempted from this type of coverage. Getting the right workers’ compensation benefits is usually a complex process that requires the input of a seasoned workers’ compensation lawyer. This lawyer will help you determine whether your situation, circumstance of the injury or illness and work category you are in will make you eligible to benefit from the workers’ compensation benefits.

Decorations

Homemade Christmas decorations are some of the most unique. They are also a lot of fun because you can enjoy them with your family. Below are 4 fun and easy to make homemade Christmas decorations:

Popcorn Stringing

If you like strung popcorn, it's really simple to make. Start with a big bowl of popcorn (unbuttered, of course) and string it piece by piece using a standard sewing needle and thread. Make sure there's plenty of popcorn because, if you're stringing it for garland, you're going to need a lot.

Cranberry Stringing

Much like the popcorn stringing method, many people used to string cranberries using a standard needle and thread. Again, make sure there's plenty to go around if you're going to use it as garland. Most importantly, and I know it's tempting, don't eat all the decorations. Save some for the Christmas tree.

Paper Chains

One of the greatest memories of decorating for Christmas, as a child, has to be the traditional paper chains. Using green and red construction paper, cut horizontal strips of each color. Fold them into a circle and seal with tape. Scotch tape is recommended and, if you use this when your child is young, the smell will always remind them of Christmas. It will likely become "Christmas tape" to them. Once you have a complete circle, take another strip in an alternating color and run it through the first circle. Next, fold it around and seal with tape. Complete this step until you have a big strand of paper garland in red and green. You and your child will enjoy doing this together and it will create wonderful memories for you both.

Lighted Wreath

If you love the look of a lighted wreath, but don't quite have a budget for one of the more expensive ones, consider another option. You can purchase a plain green wreath very inexpensively. A small strand of lights can cost anywhere from $1. 00 to $3. 00. But, put them together and you have the look of a professionally lighted Christmas wreath. For this project, you could use either clear or multi-colored Christmas lights. Simply take the plain green wreath and wrap the lights around in a design similar to the stripes on a candy cane. Once you've gone all the way around, tuck the last light into the green of the wreath. Make sure that you place it near an electric outlet because there will not be a lot of extra cord. Now that you're ready, plug it in and see your very own design. A red bow is a nice touch, but not necessary. As people drive by, they will see a beautifully lit wreath in your window and they will have no idea that you saved a few bucks by wrapping the lights yourself.

Interior Painting Tips: Removing Wallpaper

A Residential Painting Company Shares Tricks for Getting That Stubborn Paper Off

Wallpaper. Back before it was that thing on your desktop, it was something used for decorating the walls of a home, and is even still popular with some homeowners. But if you’re looking at wallpapered walls and it’s just not speaking to your décor instincts, then you’ll probably want to go the interior painting route. There’s just one problem: you’ve got to get rid of that wallpaper before you start.

Wait, what?

“Can’t I just paint over the wallpaper?” you ask, gaping at your computer monitor. Technically, you could, but there are a few really good reasons why you shouldn’t. First off, wallpaper goes up in strips, and this means there are seams—seams which will show through your fresh paint job. And speaking of showing through, any textures, patterns, and colours have the potential to remain visible. Not to mention, if the wallpaper begins to loosen for any reason, it could bubble or even detach from the wall, paint or none! Now you understand why a residential painting company prefers in most cases to remove before painting. So how do you do that?

Start Small

If you’re not familiar with the wallpaper that was applied, tear off a small piece (somewhere inconspicuous if you can). Some wallpapers are designed to be strippable, leaving no trace (not even adhesive) as they’re pulled away. If you’re lucky enough, you can start your interior painting work in no time! Otherwise…

Removing Stubborn Paper

If it doesn’t peel flawlessly, then you’ll have to soak it. Use a wallpaper-coring tool (or a fork, but be careful not to stab the drywall) to make small holes in the paper, then soak a small area in warm water and detergent. To save water, work section by section, soaking, letting it sit for five minutes, and then removing the paper with a scraper. Be sure to remove any remaining adhesive, but be careful not to scratch or damage the wall underneath.

Removing Multiple Layers

It’s a nightmare come true—you remove a test strip, only to find more wallpaper underneath. You can rent a steamer to make removing these layers easier, or contact your local residential painting company for assistance.

Removing Vinyl

Some wallpapers today are made of vinyl, which is favoured for its longevity. Don’t worry, that doesn’t make it especially hard to remove! In fact, the outer layer of vinyl can simply be pulled from the wall by hand, leaving only its backing behind. Now just jump ahead to soaking like you would normally, and scraping away (once the vinyl’s gone, you won’t need to core it).

If at any stage you’re unsure of how to proceed, just give your local residential painting company a call; they have experience tackling all the hurdles an interior painting job could possibly throw at you!
