Exterior Painting vs. Winter Weather

House Painters’ Tips on Protecting Your Home from the Elements

We may have had a green Christmas this year, but that doesn’t mean freezing rain and blizzards aren’t waiting around the corner. It’s time to get your home ready for the harsh winter months. While for ourselves, getting ready for winter mainly means buying a warm coat and winter boots, sadly the same can’t be said about your home.

You may have spruced up your home’s exterior this past summer or fall with a fresh coat. Wouldn’t it be a real shame if, come spring, all that effort were to go to waste, and it was ruined by snow and ice? Luckily, there are a few precautions you can take to ensure your home’s exterior painting lasts throughout the bitter winter months.

The main causes of damage during winter arise from your house expanding and contracting due to the constantly changing exterior temperature. This movement will cause the exterior paint to crack and chip. Precipitation (i.e. snow and freezing rain) can also cause paint to blister, leading to chips and bubbles which ruin your paint job’s smooth finish. To protect your exterior paint, you must combat these elements.

The first step comes long before winter. If you want to make sure the initial painting is done properly, then it’s best to hire professional house painters to make sure every coat is applied to last. Whether you paint it yourself or hire a professional, wear and tear will still happen. So before winter sets in, fix and repaint any blisters or chips—after all, existing damage will only worsen, and will be harder to fix later.

As we all well know, Canadian winters can be incredibly harsh on everyone—especially your home’s exterior painting. Having a protective coating will not only strengthen your homes endurance, but it will pay for itself over the years as you save time and money on maintaining it.

Once you’ve gotten all the precautionary measures down, here are a few tips from professional house painters to keep in mind during the winter months:

Make sure nothing is touching your home’s exterior (i.e. plant life, dirt, outdoor appliances) that can freeze and become attached to it. Allowing this to happen will cause or agitate chips and blisters. Also, make sure any gutters or downspouts are sealed and working to avoid water drips from freezing and wearing down the paint.

Lastly, be careful when clearing snow away from your home (e.g. shoveling, salt, and gravel). After all, you’ll be kicking yourself if you’re the one damaging your home instead of the weather!

Your home does not have the luxury of snuggling up inside with hot-chocolate and a good book.
Take care of it, and make sure it’s winter-ready so your home’s exterior painting stays looking great all the way until spring.
